the reason I ask is that when I go to my religious relatives homes, they seem to have only 5 or 6 books - the Bible and a few cook books.

Most Christians haven't read the entire Bible.

I am sure many Christians read other books also , and including their BIBLE.. I have an exstensive library of books( albeit mostly Christian books) and I try to read a book a month ( that includes BIBLE time)
If I had to give a percentage I would say atleast 60%. That's very high but my reasoning is if a Christian will read their BIBLE , then they will also read other things . For whatever reason .. For knowledge , fun, etc...I know I do ..

Some people just don't have time or are not into reading as much as others .. That might be why your relative have only a few books around..

To me the more books , the better :) and that includes my BIBLE

Hope this helped .. Love and Blessings to you

There are people who just never tended to read. When they come to Christ, they start reading the Bible. Many of those end up reading other books as well. So I believe that more people are reading because of faith than would be otherwise.
Of course, you will always find a few very narrow-minded people who think any book beside the Bible shouldn't be read, I guess, but I think there are very few of those. I'm not sure I've even met any.
I have, however, met people in North America and in Europe who didn't know how to read, and who learned how from the Bible because that motivated them. And some of those went on to get more general education.

I have numerous other books which I read on a regular basis.
Yes I have cookbooks, (don't read those too often).
I have books on American history, Chaucer and Shakespeare, I have a large library of Christian theology, gardening, books on physics and mathematics, not too many on social sciences.
I also read some current authors and some fiction, Matthieson, Pynchon, books on Natural History which I read with a grain of salt. I like to read Jon Krakauer, David Brower, Sue Hubble,Dostoevsky, to name a few.
I think you would be surprised at the percentage of Believers who read much more than "just" the Bible.
But having read the Bible several times, and believing it to be absolute truth, inspired by God.... I find it to be the most challenging, invigorating, life-giving, exciting, thrilling read around.
And the only piece of literature I think worthy to spend a natural lifetime rereading and studying in depth for as long as I am here on this side of the vale.
I find the Bible to be the only book which reliably provides the answers for life's difficult questions.

Many have read the Bible and few other books because reading is not something fond to all people, but if they are Christian they may be compelled to read the Scriptures because they have spiritual meaning to the individual's life.

Well then, you need to get out more.

Common sense will tell you that there is a high percentage of Christians who are educated beyond High School. The only way to get a Bachelors, Masters, PhD degree, is to read "other" books.

I've read tons of other book - love Stephen King!

There is a mixture of just about everything on my shelves, along with my Bible.

God gave each person talents. They are there either for you to expand or to ignore. The Bible feeds you spiritually, but I believe it is up to yourself to exercise your brain. Albeit by reading, gardening, baking, cooking or whatever. Some people probably do not have broad interests or do not wish to expand their vision and wisdom.

If Y!Answers are anything to go by, I bet less than 2% of them have read any other book!

They try to seclude themselves, try not to read any other books, especially ones considered holy, so as not to find the truth.
