it's really not that dangerous... I know of a woman in her early seventies who is learning to skate (and doing quite well, too).
I have been skating for a year and a half now, and relatively speaking I've fallen a lot, but it didn't do any permanent damage (except I tore my pants on my toe pick once!).
about convincing your mom... you know her and I don't, so I can't really tell what will or will not work. however, you might try:
1. quit trying to convince her for a few days. just be as nice and polite and obedient and sweet as you can (without being too obvious about it.)
3. listen to your mom objectively. she could have good reasons for thinking it's dangerous. sometimes moms do know best.
2. is 'dangerous' really her reason? maybe she has other misgivings she doesn't want to tell you about for some reason. maybe she feels you're already doing too much. maybe she's concerned about the cost. or maybe she tried skating once and wasn't good at it, so she thinks you wouldn't be good at it.
4. don't compare it to the other sports you're taking because that might make her consider taking you out of the other sports! instead, you could offer to be very careful, wear kneepads, don't go too fast, etc.
good luck!

Hey!
Don't worry about it. You could try helping out around the house or whatever to show you are responsible and are safe and considerate. Not that you are not already, but maybe put in more effort. Like, if you usually feed the dog, in this example. You could feed and water the dog without being told to.
Personal experience: I love horses and really wanted to volunteer with horses so I worked really hard to show my mom and dad that I was responsible enough for the volunteer job. To this day, I still work hard, maybe not as much but still, it makes a difference. You will feel better and you will be making yourself a better person. :-)
Trust me, Ice skating and any other sport is hard work and if you already do a sport you know this, you have to be responsible! If you are not you might actually be hurting yourself and anyone else on the ice.
I am sorry this was so long but I just wanted to help and good luck to you on being a newly responsible and future Ice Skater!

What you need to do is talk to maybe a coach or friends you know that have ice skated before. And once they say that it is not dangerous then maybe she will think it is ok. Maybe she is just telling that it is dangerous sport just so that she will not have to pay for the lessons. Ice skating can come to a large cost depending on your level. Maybe instead of going straight into lessons you can take classes. Good luck!

There are different levels in skating. You, as a beginner, would be better off taking lessons. When you go ice skating, the lessons will help you have more control, and you will learn how to stop, and how to get up if you fall. But once you get to the jumps and spins you and your mom can talk it over to see if you really want to continue. And tell your mom their are many ways to protect you. By wearing knee pads, elbow pads, butt pads, helmets and many more. Tell her falling on the ice is the same as falling on the sidewalk, its hard, and it might hurt a little, but you can always get back up. Falling is a part of learning, it happens to everyone. And just start and see how much you really like it then make your decision if you want to do this competitivly. Good Luck!

Try bargaining with your mom. Tell her you'll get a job and pitch in, or do community service.
Ice skating isn't dangerous, even granny's ice skate. Check out about.com, and see what it says! It really helps with physical fitness, flexibility, and helps with the brain. Concentration, the ability to stay calm, etc! Its a great sport.
Maybe you can have an agreement that if you accomplish something in a certain amount of time, then you'll continue doing it, and it'll add on pressure to keep you giving ur all.
your mom will give in, just show her that you CAN do it. all you need is sometime and a chance.

It would be more dangerous to skate without haveing had lessons. I used to see kids roller skate; they could go fast but hadn't been taught how to stop, so they'd crash into a wall or into a friend. About the only thing dangerous about ice skating would be the lifts, when the man has the woman over his head and is spinning around. I doubt you are going to try that.

in lessons they'll teach you everything! you start with just gliding, and then you gradually go up to harder stuff. actually, they teach you how to fall first. LOL. it's not dangerous, at all! i've been skating for about a year now and i'm working on my spins and starting single jumps. if you don't try to do all kinds of tricks the first time you step on the ice, you won't get hurt. promise! i hope your mom lets you, ice skating if the best and funnest sport ever!

Dangerous..?!?!?! Wow, that's a first on me! It's one of the most graceful sports I know of! Maybe if you just watch a lot of it on TV or watch movies about ice skating she'll see what a beautiful sport it is. Or get literature on it to show her it's not dangerous. The odds of even breaking a bone are slim at best. I *loved* ice skating when I was young!

make her watch figure skating rather than hockey. I dont know where you live, but ask you parents to get skates for you and go to a local pond, so that they can be on the ice with you and hold on to you if need. or you can just get a helmet, and wrist guards, that will prevent any serious injury, good luck. skating is fun

well just bring up the topic and talk it through ask her why she thinks it's so dangereous I had the same problem except with gymnastics with my mom and we talked it through and eventually told her I would be really careful and try not to get hurt doing it just try to find ways that it's not dangereous the only part thats relly dangereous is you fall on ur butt alot but they have butt pads and you could wear knee pads and stuff so if you fell it wouldn't hurt.
