I know everybody will castigate me for this, but simply buy yourself a good English dictionary, then every time you find yourself using a word you're not sure of, just look it up. Don't forget, you can get pocket-sized ones, and then you can look to see what castigate means as well as see if I've spelled it correctly!

I think the reason why reading doesn't work for you is because it's a passive activity. The words are there in front of, you don't have to think about how they're spelled. You'd be better doing something that really makes you think about the spelling. Make a list of the words you know you have difficulty with and test yourself on spelling them until you can get them right. Do you learn English mainly through listening? If you do, I'd suggest that when you learn a new word, you make sure you find out how it's spelled, not just how you pronounce it. Maybe you could get a notepad to use as a vocab book.

First, use a spell checker or a dictionary everytime you are not sure about the spelling of a certain word. Read good books. Read magazines. Read the newspapers. Buy a good dictionary. Write down the spelling of difficult words and try to memorize their spelling. You may also attend some Spelling classes. You may also get some books on the most commonly misspelled words.

Hey, I'm English, and my spelling is appalling! My excuse is that I had a hippy for an English Teacher!
Read widely will help - also use a spell checker and actually look at the corrections being made - I've found my spelling has improved immensely by doing this.

I used to do well in English at school because I read so much. My spelling became fairly good too-I think it is absorbed as you are reading.However-age may be a factor. Also consciously selecting words as you are reading will help. To learn to spell a person has to see the word-so what better way than reading. So I think that is the answer-to read a lot.Good luck

hi, i imagine practice nonetheless makes suitable. There are some internet sites that supply quizzes on spelling, the position you examine a paragraph and %. out the words that are spelled incorrect. also, perhaps you are able to do more suitable writing, preserve a mag, and if you're uncertain of the spelling of a note you wrote down, you are able to continuously search for advice from the dictionary or the computing device note record. i actually recognize the very undeniable truth that you want to advance on spelling. There are fewer human beings now, who care about the right grammar and spelling. wish you get more suitable positive at it.

OK let me first be a pedant:
"English" not "english" and "Britain" not "briton"
I'm a lousy speller, but I am a journalist and writer!! I use a spellchecker all the time. It's not the end of the world if you are not a great speller. Grammar is far more important - get a copy of Lynne Truss's "Eats, Shoots and Leaves"
