I failed Army basic training 3 year ago. (My discharge was FTA, Failure to Adapt). My "friend" had told me that if I want to leave army just act suicidal, so I slashed my hand and was kicked out the next week. Soon I had realized what exactly I have done with my life and career. I don't have any issues that I’m aware of; I’m not on drugs, not depressed, I'm a full time college student and work for a reputable company as well. My dream however is to be a police officer, do I still have a chance? Would greatly appreciate any comments.

Sounds like you make a terrible decision three years ago that will haunt you today. What are you going to tell the police recruiters? That you lied and cheated your way out of the army? I really doubt that they will hire you either way, sorry.

I think you should stay with your current job. You say that you are working with a reputable company. You will end up making more money than a police officer. Citizens are not going to trust you to carry a loaded weapon if they learn that you faked suicide in the army. They will not want you as a police officer. What you don't understand is that money equals power. You will make more money by not becoming a police officer, and you will have more control over your life. You will be in a position of authority because you will have more money to spend than anyone in the police force. Being in the police force will be very similar to the way it was when you were in the army. I really don't understand why you want to be a policeman. A policeman is basically a soldier. Wasn't that what you were trying to avoid becoming in the army? Wasn't that the reason you faked suicide?

Well depends on how long ago that happened.. if you were really young and stupid the department might have you take a psychological test to see if your better. And let you take the training. You also might take law enforcement type classes and then you will meet others that are trying for the police academy. You could find out as you make friends with your classmates what your chances are..sometimes the things you felt was right 5 years ago turn out to be totally stupid and you can get accepted. You will never know until you try.

The military teaches you discipline and the 'law enforcement' field is always looking for that in a person. Because of what you did, you may not fit into being a police officer either. The only way to really tell is to talk to some, let them know what happened in the past and if it will be a determining factor or not - or - go to a college counselor and discuss the entire issue with them. They will let you know what your chances are...............

if u have no prior arrest record or anything of that sort i believe your discharge would be treated as a medical...don't try to hide it..go talk to the police chief where u live and he can tell u what your chances are and perhaps help u get into the academy

Passing the MMPI Psyhc testing and the polygraph would be my biggest concern. They ask so many questions that it's bound to come out you tried to commit suicide and that's a huge no-no when applying as a police recruit.

You can try, but I would be hesitant to give you a loaded weapon until you have gone through a full battery of tests. Your actions were too rash and extreme, there is something inside you needs to be looked at.

I think that you chances of becoming a police office with that black mark against you is near zero. The police dept. cannot have anyone who they remotely suspect as being unstable in any way.
