=Just don't force it. Go with your heart - and your gut. Try to read his body language though. You don't want to ruin a good friendship if he's not ready for a relationship.
Maybe, you could just let him know that YOU are open to the idea (bring up the subject of food... tell him that you are a pretty good cook... invite him over for a "sample" dinner ;) or tell him that you think that the two of you should have a small dinner party for a few friends next weekend... he might be competitive enough to do it, or interested and say it should be just the two of you... any thing can happen once you open the door so to speak...) let HIM take it from there.
*Im sorry, I just read thru the other answers and had to come back to add this: JOANNE M & Paddy B cracked me up!! TOOO funny!!

This has got to be the most asked question on this site!! I know i have asked it before.
So you like this guy and you both are close which makes it so much harder because if he does not feel the same way then you might loose his friendship, although it could work out even better because he may also be feeling the same as you but is scared to tell you.
Why not test the water a little, try a little flirting to see how he responds. After that just ask him out for a drink and tell him that you have started to like him as more than a friend, tell him how comfortable he makes you feel but also tell him that you understand that if he does not feel the same way you two will still stay friends.
You do have to tell him babe, you cant stand in the background forever.
Good luck xxx

Been there done that... sit down with him whether it be while grabbing a bite to eat or even before saying goodbye after spending time with each other. Tell him that you don't think you can go on being just friends with him because you care about him a lot more than that. Ask him how he feels and how he sees the situation. You may not get the answer you wanted, but just incase that's the case you can move on and find someone who does like you...good luck girl! :)

Send him a postcard.
No joke - it just might work! It's light hearted and simple and a postcard keeps you to the basics of the mesage so you end up talking about it after he gets it. It's an icebreaker for the conversation.

Tell him what's in your Heart!
and if he is the one, you'll be better off,
but his not, go find the one who really cares what is in your Heart!
Ask him how he feels about you too!
Love is the Answer!

Be blunt, it's easier than dropping hints. I'm a guy and hints just don't work for some reason. Just don't make it too public.

Do not tell him unless he tells you first. Man needs to make the first move after all.
