The existence of an accelerated Greenhouse Effect - aka "Global Warming" - caused from humans burning fossil fuels (and rain forests) is no more a "fact" than is, say, evolution. Those who posit otherwise - usually citing the "proof" that science says so - are mostly engaging in circular logic. Many scientists candidly agree that they are not entirely sure if permanent, irreversible Global Warming is happening at all, or - if it is - that very likely the process is: (A) part of Earth's natural multi-thousand-year temperature cycle, and/or (B) due (at least in part) to cyclical variation in the heat output of our own sun.

This latter possibility seems to gain credence in this March 2007 article in National Geographic in which Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, is reported as publishing findings that show Mars has "Global Warming", too.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070228-mars-warming.html
Looks like those pesky Martians are driving too many SUVs, just like us. Actually, Abdussamatov said "The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars."
In reading the National Geographic article (see above), one quickly notes that, early-on, the NG reporter gives all non-Global-Warming evidence a negative spin, referring to Abdussamatov's findings as "... one scientist's controversial theory." The bulk of the NG article then lards (and lauds) itself with endless citations and quotes (more circular logic and mutual tail-sniffing) from other scientists who favor the notion that mankind is causing Global Warming. Incredibly, the ""Wobbles in the orbit [and axis] of Mars" are cited by said scientists as the reason for the current warming of Mars, while they preemptively dismiss the wobble of Earth's own axis as being merely "responsible for the waxing and waning of ice ages [every 20,000 to 100,000 years]." DUH. The present so-called "Global Warming" on Earth sounds like we're now in one of the waning periods to me. I agree with Abdussamatov when he says "The solar irradiance began to drop in the 1990s, and a minimum will be reached by approximately 2040. It will cause a steep cooling of the climate on Earth in 15 to 20 years."
Here is my entire opinion on so-called Global Warming:

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Please! Don't try to confuse things with facts. Obviously, Amato Evan is a quack, for having views that "are completely at odds with the mainstream scientific opinion." Do you actually think that science is about studying things and seeking explanations? How naive! Science is about concensus.
The warming on Mars is either a mistake in measurement, an inconvenient truth to be ignored, or because of, let's see now, "wobbles in the orbit of Mars are the main cause of its climate change in the current era"... yeah, yeah that's it! Don't let anyone tell you that these wobbles don't exist, just because no one has observed them.
In fact, it's probably those darn Martians jumping up and down that is causing those wobbles!

Three points. With data, not just my assertions.
First, Mars is warming less, and more slowly. Solar radiation is increasing a little. It explains Mars, but not the Earth. The data on Earth (solar radiation has been measured many times independently) shows that clearly.
Solar variation amounts to 0.12 watts per meter squared. Man caused heating is 1.6 watts per meter squared. More than ten times as much. I'll cite one source, but there are many.
http://www.ipcc.ch/spm2feb07.pdf...
Second, the vast majority of scientists think global warming is real and it's us. The assertion that 93% disagree is absurd. They surveyed all 928 scientific papers from 1993-2003 that used the words "climate change". The number that said global warming was natural? Zero.
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686
Third, the assertion that the scientists were saying we were in danger of cooling 20 years ago is a myth.
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=94
All this and much more is why the people below think global warming is real. They don't get their science from Al Gore (who they probably dislike) they get it from the best scientists in the world. They've heard the global warming deniers arguments, and they don't buy them. You may not respect all of them, but surely you respect some.
"The science of global warming is clear. We know enough to act now. We must act now."
James Rogers, CEO of Charlotte-based Duke Energy.
"The overwhelming majority of atmospheric scientists around the world and our own National Academy of Sciences are in essential agreement on the facts of global warming and the significant contribution of human activity to that trend."
Russell E. Train, Republican, former environmental official under Presidents Nixon and Ford
"We simply must do everything we can in our power to slow down global warming before it is too late. The science is clear. The global warming debate is over."
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican, Governor, California
"Our nation has both an obligation and self-interest in facing head-on the serious environmental, economic and national security threat posed by global warming."
John McCain, Republican, Senator, Arizona
"These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment - and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change."
President George Bush

There is no evidence of global warming on Mars. One ice cap shrinking over a two year period is evidence of one thing, and one thing only- one ice cap has shrunk over a two year period. Inferring global warming from this would be like seeing a snow storm here on Earth, in say pennsylvania, and claiming that that is evidence that Earth is going into an ice age!
Realclimate has an excellent article on this, but in case you don't want to read through the whole thing, here's the most important bit "The observed regional changes in south polar ice cover are almost certainly due to a regional climate transition, not a global phenomenon, and are demonstrably unrelated to external forcing."
http://www.realclimate.org/index.php?p=192
::Edit::
Oh come now Timothy, are you truly naive enough to think the only evidence we have of global warming on Earth is melting ice caps? Here on Earth, we have poles melting, surface temperature rising, tropospheric temperatures rising, permafrost melting, glaciers world wide melting, CO2 concentrations increasing, bore-hole analysis showing warming, sea ice receding, proxy reconstructions showing warming, sea level rising, sea surface temperatures rising, energy imbalance, ice sheets melting and stratosphere cooling...etc all of which leads us to believe we have GHG driven global warming.
On Mars we have one spot melting, which leads us to believe...one spot is melting.

Well, a former Canadian Defense Minister thinks we should consider the possibility that alien technology might rid us of fossil fuels and save the planet (earth), so I'd say that Mars ratifying the Kyoto treaty is just as likely.

Just less than 20 years ago they were touting the coming of the next ice age and now we have been "Warming?" since 1900 and it got worse in the last 20 years. 20 years = 20 years and we were freezing and now we are going to cook. Lots of naysaying nuts in this world and they are going on down to burn in He&ll for all eternity accourding to "their" bible. I guess that is what the 7% of scientists touting warming are talking about. Naysayers are laughable. Lets all think a little and how about we listen to the 93% of scientists that say golbal warming is so far just a wish and a myth sent forth by naysaying idiots.

We in simple terms have 30 or 40 years of climate records style mars. we don't understand plenty approximately long term climate types there. we are able to look at earth climate history going back hundreds of years.
