Gambling is never a good investment. No matter how good a streak you're on, you will eventually lose.

It depends on the size of the bet in relation to the pot. If it's pretty cheap to call (and I really can't put my opponent on a specific hand) I might do it just to find out the kind of cards a person will play.

I assume you are talking about calling a bet in Texas Holdem poker? Simply calling is actually one of the worst ways to obtain information about what your opponents hole cards may be. There is actually a derogatory term called "calling station" used by experienced holdem players to describe a player who simply just calls their opponents' bets rather than folding or raising. You want to avoid this as calling will tel you nothing about what hand you are up against and will surrender control of the hand to your opponent by merely reacting to what they are betting. These "calling stations" are usually calling with a hand that is worse than their opponents hand and end up winning only by getting lucky on the river (i.e., calling station has J10 on J52 flop against opponent's AA, calls all the way to end with a dominated hand but catches on 10 on the river). Your best option in a fixed limit holdem game to help you gauge the strength of your opponent's hole cards is to raise before the flop or on the flop where it is generally only half what it would cost on the turn or river. If your opponent reraises you, he's sending a pretty good signal that he's strong. If he folds obviously you had the better of him or at least bluffed him out. And if he just calls, now you have earned control of the betting and will be able to use that advantage on the future rounds . . . especially when you have "position" or are the last to act by being closer to the dealer's button than your opponent.

sure. if you have a drawing hand and he made a bet after the flop and then checked for a free card you know he has a drawing hand and you got a free card or took control of the betting.

YES for the one giving the information. They know as much as you do on the outcome of a game or the likes. EVER heard of UPSETS or the UNDERDOG coming back to win a game.
