Jose' can you see? It is similar to the Helen Keller story. It is about a poor Latino boy from the slums of East Los Angeles who learns to sing one song and sing it well. He only performs at sporting events. Although, he is blinded by the publicity, he learns to hit all the notes. His brother has all the charm. He is Mister Juan Derfull. He adopted a stage name.

"What does he see" is an improper question. The song never says Jose sees anything. He could be blind. Wouldn't that make you feel bad? Poor Jose.

José is a Mexican and a direct descendant of several different families in Mexico who's ancestors used to own most of the land in the Southwestern US region of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, California, and Texas, by virtue of land grants given them by the King of Spain. Spain ruled that part of the new world through it's colonial power over Mexico, until the Westward expansion of the newly formed United States resulted in war against Mexico in the early to mid 1800s over the disputed lands. The US won,and forced most of the Mexicans off their land and across the Rio Grand (Rio Bravo) into what's know today as Mexico. José is just straining his eyes looking north across the border, trying to see where he came from, and to find his way back home.
Sorry folks, they didn't teach us that in school, for the same reasons that Japanese schools don't teach their children that Japan started the war between the US and Japan in WW2. We don't want to make ourselves look bad. You have to study on your own to really discover the truth!

Nooo no no no.......
It's â« Jose, can you sing? â« And he can't. Afterall, he's the one that taught Roseanne how to sing the national anthem. Did you hear her? Well at least she made Jose famous by singing about him. However, the problem is that she drank too much of his tequilla before singing the anthem at the ball game.
