Who should one contact to authenticate a painting? In particular whether the signature on the painting is real? If hypothetically it was a Renoir who could authenticate it?

Any contact details would be appreciated.

questions, do you own this picture, or are you going to buy it?

if you own this picture, what was its provence - how long have you owned it?

who do you think the signature belongs to..... there are experts on works by different artists. If you wanted the work of Deigo De Reveria to be examined, you would not take it to somebody who specilises in the Italian Renaissence would you?

If it is French, 19th century, then you ave a few good places to contact.

the age can be detirmined by the canvas, pigment and style. The Courtauld Gallery in London, have a school of restoration and a collection that includes seval impressionists, so they would be my first place of call.

most national collections have an open day when you can take in works to ask the experts what they think, these would be the best starting place, because they will reccomend a qualified person whom they trust.

failing that get in touch with the IIC (International Institute of Conservation) which in the UK is ICON.

A conservator will be able to say if it is worth spending the money for an art authentication expert to study the work. the cost is about (up to 1 million $ :) 5 % - (from 1million up to 10 million $ :) 3 1/2 % - above : 3 %

You wouldn't authenticate a work yourself you would ask an expert. The signature on a work is not enought information. They would need to see provenance, a history of where the painting had been since its creation. They would also look at the actual painting technique to see if it was similar to that of the artist in question etc.

Please be very careful. Pay a professional to authenticate it. (art expert) Take a lot of time and check absolutely everything before buying. It is not only that it may be a forgery it can also be not worth that amount of money even if it is a Renoir, for many reasons (availability of similar pieces, etc. )
