We take him out for half an hour or so after meals, and so on but he always does it in the kitchen. We have a garden and we'd like to teach him to go out on his own when he needs the toilet. We're getting one of the litter things too.

He will need to be put on a leash and walked to the spot where you would like him to go. Do not offer any other place. Once he does, praise him anyway you'd like and immediately take him inside. Repeat this for every bathroom visit. In a very short time he will get what you are trying to teach him. If he goes elsewhere, bring him back to the spot where you want him to pee, usually a dog has the concept in about a week as long as you are constant and don't deviate from the structured potty routine P.S. don't add the litter thing to the equation yet. It will be too confusing. Hope it helps.

How old is the dog and what kind is it? Ok, first you need to take it out at least once an hour. The dog needs to sleep in a crate at night until it knows to go outside. Next, with it being a lab, make sure not to over feed because this will cause it to have to go to the bathroom more. Try to feed it something like Eagle Pack or something premium to prevent the puppy from going poop so much. Also, make sure to switch it to adult food at six months. If you have any more questions, just ask. I hope this helps. Also I wouldn't do the litter thing cause the dog will be a big dog and a big dog will have problems when they get full grown to go in a litter box. Also, when your dog goes potty outside, make sure to give him a treat to let him know he did a good job. My puppy is now 10 months old and is potty trained and she gets a treat every time she comes in.

We are NOT experts, but have potty trained our dogs and some foster dogs and this is what we do: Our dogs go outside either in the fenced in back yard or for a walk and do it in the yard. I would start by taking the dog out every forty five minutes or so.It is better to take him out frequently for ten minute intervals rather than only two or three times a day for half an hour. One thing you want to teach him is to do his business, then come back in.If he hasnt went in half an hour,he prob doesnt have to.Also, you do not want him used to having half an hour to his business, cause that is what he will be used to, regardless or snow, rain, cold, etc When you are putting his leash on him or letting him out the door if he goes in a safe area alone, tell him lets go potty (or whatever phrase u want to use)..It will take time but he will gradually understand why he is going.Take treats out with you in your pocket or purse (some place he cant see them, not your hand) and when he DOES go, make a BIG deal out of with lots of praise (good boy, smart boy, etc).and give him a treat. If he doesnt potty, no treat. Inside,if you do see him squatting or lifting his leg, say "NO' in a firm, gently voice (do not yell or scream) and get him outside quickly as possible while saying "lets potty outside". It will take time and lots of positive reinforcement. Some stores and trainers offer potty training classes. GOOD LUCK
