Of course it is possible; it depends on the person. When the symptoms of mental illness are under control through medication (or if the symptoms improve and medication is no longer needed), the individual has a stronger potential to work on matters like self esteem. A good psychiatrist can provide the medication or determine if medication is no longer needed.

If the patient has a great deal of trouble dealing with matters like self esteem; a referral to a therapist or counselor might be helpful. I have had both psychiatric treatment and counselling. I'm not sure if counselling benefitted me very much, but everybody isn't the same. Some people can get the same effect by just talking to a friend who is willing to listen and is not judgmental.

I think the thing to keep in mind is many times the depression, panic, anxiety are not due to your own fault (like thinking you having a weak mind or that there is something wrong with you), but that tons of people suffer from the same thing because it is a chemical imbalance in the brain. There are a lot of great medications out there that help people cope with panic/depression. And when you feel better and feel in control, the self esteem will naturally go up. Hope you feel better soon.
