I am worried about the effect of his bowels movements if I did this. I read that Cherrios could be used. I was thinking of the cost of them.

Cheerios are a fine idea. They are far more healthy then many of the treats they sell for dogs. If you look at the back of a treat package you will see incredible amounts of sodium and preservatives, etc. Cheerios also is a good source of fiber so bowel movements will not be a problem. Just remember not to go overboard on any treat. I having a roly-poly treat lover.

The sugar content in Cheerios (starches are high in sugar content) can cause a dog to become diabetic and/or overweight. It can also cause many other health problems such as hypoglycemia, hyperactivity and high blood pressure. The excess weight that the dog will gain from the poor nutrition can cause them to have a stroke or heart attack, or they can die prematurely. And, they will not be as active anymore because they their bodies won't be able to function as they used to. They can become depressed, which in some studies has been proven to cause the body to shut down even in humans. So, moral of the story, Cheerios-bad! For Fido that is.

I wouldn't use Cheerios. When my puppy was little, I used Sports Mix treats for when she did something good or whatever. You can get them at a pet store that usually sells premium foods. The treats cost about $1 a pound.

The Cheerios are a good idea for treats. The unflavored ones though. Most of the better dog treats are a mix of oats and apple. You can also try apples (no more than one quarter of a medium one) carrots, broccoli stalks (you know, the part you usually throw out is great for teeth cleaning and breath) turnip and pumpkin (fresh not canned). There are a number of things that are non-fattening and less expensive than dog biscuits and the dogs, if trained to the alternative treat, will prefer them.

When I run out of dog bones for a treat I do use Cheerios for both of my dogs not very many just once in a while. Cheerios is what I gave my son for a snack when he was a toddler because they were low in sugar. He still eats them today.

I don't think cheerios is a good idea. When I come home and
my dog barks I hold up a piece of his food, he sits there and
waits. The dog does not know it is not a treat. He loves it, cause
he thinks he's getting a treat. But I buy milk bones and things
that are good for them. They don't cost much and they are
better for them.

Never thought of Cheerios for a treat. My vet suggested Animal Crackers. I get them at Walmart for about 1.50 for 2 lbs. So I guess Cheerios would be good too. My dogs love the animal crackers. I do use them sparingly, usually only half per treat. I have 2 ShihTzu's. I guess it depends on the size of your dog.

My favorite training treat is Charlee Bear treats. They are all natural, look like oyster crackers, come in 2 flavors (available at most pet food stores) and only have 3 calories per treat! They have been very effective with my dogs, especially my foster dog who knew absolutely nothing when she came to live with me. She hears the bag rattle and will snap into a sitting position now. It makes me proud of her!

Don't use people food...and not Cheerios they are too high in sugar. Use puppy size milk bone dog biscuits or other puppy treats. The cost for a box is actually cheaper than that of cereal.

Like any treat food, too much of one thing will upset his tummy. Mix it up with lamb lung pieces, diced chicken, or maybe those Natural Balance rolls of semi-wet food. I train all the time for agility and I use that a lot as it's good for my dogs and doesn't upset their stomachs. I use cheese and other things too, as I don't want my dogs to become bored with my treats!
