You can paste icons for most apps in the Finder, by using "Get Info" on the application, selecting the icon in that window, and then pasting a new icon from your clipboard.

Unfortunately, that won't work for everything, such as Trash and Finder itself. The easiest way to change such stubborn icons is to purchase Candy Bar (link below). It's cheap ($12.95) and safe!

If you don't want to spend any money, you can fire up Terminal and type in UNIX commands to change those icons, but the exact way to do that depends on which version of MacOS you're running. You also run the risk of messing something up if you typo or don't quite understand what you're doing. If you are familiar with UNIX and command line stuff, it's pretty easy, but if you're not, it's probably worth buying Candy Bar.

you sometimes get scripts that install icons, but you can override the icon in the finder!

get the new image into your paste-buffer, any method will work!

command-i on the file to get the new icon
click on it's icon and command-v (paste) the new picture.

to get the icon from an existing file, you command-i in that file, select the icon image and command-c (copy)
