Lower Part of Newport News where 664 meets Jefferson Ave is a really bad area for crime. Most of the neighborhoods in this area consist of Section 8 and Project Housing Developments.

Stay away from the southern parts of Hampton and Newport News. Deighby Newport News is a very nice area to live in but kind of far from all the excitement and its on the north end.

Maybe you should consider on moving to the Western Branch area in Chesapeake or Churchland area Portsmouth. Its right on the other side of the water when you cross the 664 Monitor Marimac Bridge Tunnel, nice areas that are very close to the southern part of Newport News.

Also Chesapeake Schools (especially in Western Branch) are considered the best among this area.

good luck

Back in 2003, I drove the stretch of US 17 through Yorktown and I found a decent community - less than 20 minutes away from the bases. Even after crossing the James River on US 17 - the northern part is decent but quickly deteriorates as one goes through Hampton. I think I had taken US 17 all the way to I-664.

In 2005, Newport News had a higher than national average violent crime rate, although there was a lower than national average non-violent crime rate.

Might wish to give consideration to another location in the same area.

As far as specifics within the community, If it were me, I'd use a search engine and a map program to locate 2 different church denominations in the community and 1 or 3 insurance agents also. Then I'd call these folks and try to get the lay of the land from whomever answers the phone. Folks like to share their opinions of their towns, but the folks who are not in the business of selling the town tend to be a tad more clear about both the high spots and the low spots.

the BIGGEST thing to consider: are you going against the traffic or with the traffic, especially through the tunnels. On average, not a week goes by without at least one accident in or near the tunnels. Traffic sucks during rush hour.

Because unless he has to be on base by 0630, he WILL get stuck in traffic and he will hate life.
