The wines that are better are, of course, the ones you like the best. Health wise, red wines are healthier for you due to the favonoids they contain. These flavonoids lower your risk of coronary heart disease by reducing your LDL or bad cholesterol levels.
A good way to decide which wines you like better is to visit a wine region and spend some time wine tasting at wineries. You will be able to sample lots of different wines and get a good idea of which wines you prefer.
I have found that my taste in wines have changed over the years. While I like all kinds of wines, reds are my personal favorite.
Cheers!

In terms of health effects, red is far better. In comparison, a person who drinks white wine everyday will reduce their risk of vascular disease to about 67%, whereas a red wine drinker's risk of vascular disease drops to 40%. This is due to the antioxidents in wine, most importantly Resveratol, a naturally occuring compound found in the stems, seeds, and skins of grapes. Red wine is better for you because, as you may know, the red colour is a result of the must being kept in contact with the skins before fermentation. This allows the wine to "absorb" more of these compounds.
I prefer red myself anyway!

even though you got some great answers, I'll throw my 2 cents in!
Like most have said - it depends on a couple of things. If you are serving with foods - then there are great white and reds that are good compliments to the particular foods. Are you just sipping before dinner? Then it's your preference as to taste. Do you like dry? Sweet? Do you like a particular fruity taste or do you prefer to not taste a particular flavor (then a nice "table wine" is good). I prefer very sweet and NOT dry wines - so my choices are more limited. But it's all good for me!

They're both wonderful! It depends what you're in the mood for, or perhaps what you're eating.
A rich red Aussie Shiraz goes well with steak while a beautiful white merlot can enhance the flavor of seafood.
What are you in the mood for? Something rich to sip on while the snow blows outside? Choose a nice red. A hot summer afternoon reading outside? A cool fresh white.

Only semi-dry whites for me. Chardonnays taste too oaky and buttery, and malvasia bianca makes me gag. And if I have even one glass of any red I want to fall asleep.
