What makes you think that "not believing in God" means "believing that human beings and human thinking are the pinacle of the universe"?

Quite the opposite - it's the believers in gods who insist that human beings and human thinking have some kind of magical special place in the universe.

Worse, many the believers seem to be completely incapable of even recognizing the arrogance of their position, as though it's a perfectly humble thing to claim that your position in a dispute is supported by an invisible supreme being. You can't make that claim and then turn around and claim to be humble - the two are simply incompatible. Christianity, at least, is based in the ultimate arrogance, and can't exist without it.

Your question is slightly loaded with bias. Not one Atheist that I know believes that humans are "the pinacle (sic) of the universe".

As a matter of fact, we are quite prepared to accept that there might be life-forms elsewhere in this universe that are far more intellectually evolved than we are.

Therefore, in this context, it cannot be arrogance.

Not believing in god is very different from believing that humans and human thinking are the pinnacle of the universe. Not believing in God is not arrogance, it is just being intellectually honest about objective reality.

It is not arrogance at all to think that a loving god created humans and gave us the free will to chose to love him or not. Whether we are His sole creation throughout the universe or not can only be known by Him. I find it a moot point to concentrate on things I could not possibly understand or that cant possibly effect my life one way or the other.

Romans 1:18-27

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion."

You say yam, I say sweet potato. You say freedom, I say arrogance. I really only think it matters what Father God says.
