It may appear fair on the surface but ability to pay is the key to fairness. Otherwise it is simply another regressive tax, which is unfair by definition. It is beyond a joke that the level of funding in the NHS now is not enough to balance the books. The root of the problem is poor management and over priced IT projects which do not deliver on any of the original specification, budget or time. When the Minister has only one answer to criticism of her tenure (by criticising me you are criticising all the hardworking nurse doctors cleaners etc.) a solution is not in sight.

I think it's a wonderful idea. I had my first child by emergency c-section and elected to have my second by the same means. I had to fight to get my way because they (obviously) don't like performing c-sections unless they have to. I would have happily paid for it if that option had been available to me. As it transpired my daughter came early and I ended up with another emergency c-section but for elective surgery the NHS could definitely undercut the private sector yet still provide a valuable service. I know this flies in the face of the entire NHS ethos but as it stands it won't survive anyway.

If it based on peoples finances then fair enough. If everyone has to pay for certain operations then the less well off will suffer.

most people have paid their stamp for many years contributing to the nhs, it would be hard and unfair to choose who should pay and who should not.....a lot of people who can afford it go private anyway and its more than likely it'll be the same surgeon who does the operation so he'll get paid regardless
