Hi im gald you are not trying to bleach it out as i have done this loads of times in the past and you end up with a worse result than you had in the first place. Have you tried the Feria lightening for dark hair. They are brilliant and it doesn got orange either. Ifs got the before and after on the box in a little area on the box, So it should be easier to find. Also Loreal expertese I think it is do one as well and that is hust as good. Claroil always go on dark i dont use these if i can help it unless i want to cover bleach.
Try these and see if you can lighten your hair. but i wouldnt use anymore if the feria or loreal doesnt work as you will jst damage your hair. Your dark brown hair colour will fade eventually it just takes time.

It is very hard to get your hair lighter when it's dark,i dyed ,my hair black and nothing will get it lighter, and im like you,i prefer not to use bleach.Bleach will be the only thing that will get it lighter, like highlights. The only other colour that would go over it is red and you can choose lots of different shades of red.

I wouldn't recommend a diy for this. A professional colorist can tell you exactly what will work and with no mistakes.
