Age spots come out for some reason when one is old. I read that the brown age spots were formed when the sun was so hot it dyed the skin. We damaged our skin baking out in the sun as teens. I am a senior and we didn't know about aging our skin or skin cancer in the 50's and 60's. Also, there was no such thing as sunblock then. If you are still young, then sunblock, sunblock, sunblock.

Aging is a natural process that happens to all of us. We can slow it down with certain products and procedures, but we can’t stop it. There are two ways to age. Intrinsic and extrinsic aging.
For most of us, intrinsic aging, aging occurring within our bodies, begins in our 20’s. This is when we stop growing and when our cell reproduction starts to slow down. This part of aging is also genetically determined. Surprisingly though intrinsic factors account for only 10% of the signs and symptoms of aging.
Extrinsic aging – aging due to forces outside of our body- is however not genetically determined. And it accounts for 90% of the sign and symptoms that are associated with aging skin. External factors speed up the natural aging process by more than 10yrs.

These external factors include:
·Sun damage
·Environmental effects
·Stress
·Pollution
·Smoking and
·Inadequate skin care

Lesson learned: a healthy lifestyle combined with the right skin care regiment can protect your skin, reverse damage done and slow down the aging process.
When beauty companies call their products anti-aging they are referring to the products ability to prevent the onset of aging – such as wrinkles, thinning and sagging skin, dull complexion and sun spots- for as long as possible. In this area of skin care, science has made incredible advancements and delivers you products that keep your skin looking young and beautiful as long as possible.

Symptoms of aging:
Skin aging is cumulative, and we start aging internally about a decade before the effects are visible to the naked eye. The structure of skin changes and diminishes over time. Once our cells stop growing ( in our 20’s) collagen and elastin production ( in our dermis layer- the inner or under layer of skin) starts to slow down. This means that it looses the ability to support the outer layers, causing skin to sag. At the same time, skin starts to loose elasticity ( or the ability to spring back) and you start to see wrinkles, also known as character lines.
Skin cells loose the ability to retain water, therefore they loose their plumpness and become sallow. As we age further, the middle layer of the skin starts to thin as well. Fortunately there are a number of ways you can improve your skin condition and appearance no matter what your age In

Fast Fact: How does sun damage the skin?
85% of the symptoms that are associated with the signs of aging are actually due to the harmful rays of the sun. This includes
·Deep wrinkles
·Fine lines
·Broken blood vessels
·Sallowness
·Leather like texture
·Brown and white spots
·Mottling
·Thinning skin

80% of sun damage occurs before we reach the age of 20. The short UVB waves cause sunburns, but the longer UVA rays cause the long-term damage. They alter the skin cell DNA and generate free radicals.

Now is the time to stop this harmful process. Your absolute best defense in preventing aging is a broad-spectrum sun block every day.

Three key elements to help your skin look its best:

1.Avoid the damaging sun: with 90% of aging caused by environmental damage and sun exposure, ensure that you wear a product that contains a broad spectrum sun block , and use it every day. Harmful sun rays penetrate clouds…so sun block is needed on cloudy days as well. Arbonne uses the latest in sunscreen technology in their day creams to ensure that you are protected from both the UVB and UVA rays.
2.Practice good skin care: Using skin care products incorrectly can cause problems later in life. Learn how to remove make-up, and apply sun screen to let skin breath. Follow up with exfoliation to encourage skin cell turnover, and finish with a light moisturizer to protect the skin’s water barrier.
3.Don’t mix brands: With hundreds of skin care products launched each year, it’s no wonder that many of us try the latest products…however that can lead to skin irritation and the development of sensitive skin. Skin care products need time to work, and as your body becomes accustomed to the formulas …you will see benefit. Each brand develops products to work together for best results. Pick a brand and stick with it.

Diet affects everything in our bodies. It plays a vital role in how you look, feel and of course how you age.

Eating right to keep your skin soft, glowing and strong at any age:

·Orange/red fruits and vegetables: can include tomatoes, squash and carrots- these are packed with beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant that is essential for healthy skin, scalp and mucous membranes.
·Shellfish and fish: try salmon, crab, shrimp and lobster- contain astaxanthin, an extremely potent antioxidant that protects your skin from the damaging environment, helps prevent age spots and wrinkling.
·Nuts and seeds- these are rich in vitamin E which helps protect the skin from sun damage
·Citrus fruits- such as oranges, grapefruits, are high in Vitamin C. It is essential to collagen production, and it is the collagen that gives connective tissue strength and resilience.
·Unrefined whole grain- these could be wheat, barley , oats and rye- all contain silica, a mineral that helps to repair damaged skin , hair and nails. Silica helps to strengthen collagen and elastin.

Anti-Aging Super- Foods:
Top pick for this category include any deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables. This includes tomatoes, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, berries and grapes, garlic, onions, green tea, soybean, cold water fish and spices such as turmeric, cinnamon and cumin.
All of these are very rich in PHYTOCHEMICALS. These are the molecules that give the food the striking color, taste or smell. Their responsibility is to defend the plants against infection and environmental damage, and in humans they have shown to have anticancer activity. And , just like antioxidants, they help protect the body against harmful free radicals and vascular disease.

These foods also contain omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids help lower cholesterol, improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation and facilitate weight loss. Dark leafy greens, cold water fish and soybean are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids.
They are also considered “hot” foods – they help the body burn calories in the form of heat, just by eating them.
