According to Islam, animals never deviate from the nature in which they are created, in terms of worshipping God.

"See you not that Allah, He it is Whom glorify whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with wings out-spread (in their flight). Of each one He (Allah) knows indeed his Salat (prayer) and his glorification, [or everyone knows his Salat (prayer) and his glorification], and Allah is All-Aware of what they do." [Quran 24:41]

"See you not that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and animals and beasts, and many of mankind? But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified. And whomsoever Allah disgraces, none can honour him. Verily! Allah does what He wills." [Quran 22:18]

Animals worship God in a manner that befits their nature, and they have no capability of deviating away from this, whereas humans and jinn (spirits) are given the ability to choose between faith and disbelief, and between worshipping God and worshipping others besides Him..

Based on this, they are not held accountable for their actions in general. However, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) said:

"All creatures will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection, the beasts, birds and all others. Allah's justice will be so perfect, that the un-horned sheep will receive retribution from the horned sheep. Allah will then command them, `Be dust!' This is when the disbeliever will say,

"Woe to me! Would that I were dust!''''[78: 40].
