Why On-Access scan doesn't enable?

Why On-Access scan doesn't enable?

I have McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8i version
The VirusScan On-Accessor is disabled
How do I enable it
Even if i right click the icon in tray and select the option "enable" it doesn't enable
Further if i open the on-accessor window and click the enable button also its not getting enabled
PLease help me

Please update the virus defination file and also reinstalled it
