The odds are the the Central Locking Module which is located next to the PCM (Computer) up behind the glove box is bad, we currently have a 2000 Focus with just about the same exact problems, Since the locks do work in some fashion, the fuse for the CLM is good, which is hidden on the back of the fuse block. From what were are gonna have to do here at the lot, is buy a new CLM from Ford, you can't use a used one because of theft codes and the fact its programmed to the car. Once one is programmed its stuck with that vehicle for life. So you'll have to get a new CLM and get it programmed from Ford. The programming will probably cost about $100... The CLM will vary in price due to the year, options, model, etc. Any further questions, please email me at sales@jjsautogrp.com

You should be using the remote hand-set and not the key. Some systems use key locking to enable engine immobilisation and do not arm the movement sensors. If you travel to France by ferry you soon know which cars are locked by key, the others immobilised by hand-sets have their alarms activated by movement throughout the crossing.
Check the instructions for the type of alarm thats been fitted to your car. The key might only set the engine immobiliser.Full alarm system being operated by the hand-set.
The latest EU system is 433 MHZ which is the agreed MHZ for car alarms. Hopefully radio masts, security gates will never again deactivate hand-sets : the transmitted MHZ power of the cuplrit mast being stronger than the power of your hand-set.. However if you buy a car fitted with frequency other than 433MHZ you might have problems!

There may be nothing wrong with your car. When you use the key to lock the driver's door, that may be all that happens. Do you have lock/unlock buttons on the door panel? If so, when you lock the doors using them, do they both work?

This very likely may not be your problem, but both my Mini and my husband's Mercedes central locking plays up whenever we're parked anywhere near a mobile phone mast. Plays havoc with your remote control.
