In most standard stir fry dishes and some others, the recipe might call for heating olive oil, and adding onions and garlic. My question is when you add the garlic? same time as the onion? or do you let the onion brown a bit in the oil. I always let the onions soften, THEN add the garlic since I dont' want it to burn. what's your stance on this? Thanks.

You already gave the right answer. Garlic always last in order not to burn it (spoils all the food).

Why are you using Olive oil????
use some low fat butter just a little bit, then the garlic then onion.

Garlic is harder then onion and takes more time to get brownish so when you will add water to continue cooking the garlic then while get stewed.

I always add the garlic first, cook only until just beginning to sizzle then quickly add the onions.
The garlic shouldn't burn as long as the following ingredients are added in quick succession, as they are all helping to distribute the heat.

I find that if i add the garlic second or later on, there is more chances of finding rawer lumps of garlic when you are eating.

Enjoy the lovely stir fry!

Add the garlic with the onion. It'll only burn if the heat is too high.

I personally add it at the same time as the onions so that the garlic flavour isn't too strong, especially in stir frys where the vegies generally don't take too long to cook. It takes alot to burn garlic.

I actually put the garlic in first, but only by a minute or so on a low heat.. It's just to get the flavour out really... I remove them after the onions are done (I'm not that hardcore.. The taste can be a bit too overwhelming for me/my munchers in arms).

Are you using fresh garlic? If it's fresh I add it at the same time as onions. If it's powdered, last.
