I would say trust me in just being straight forward about it. Communication is never a bad thing and when you try and "test/probe" in subtle ways, most likely you won't ever have your point come across the way you intended. If you ask me, you just as well come out and take the chance, and see what happens. If nothing, you didn't really lose anything, but atleast you gain the knowledge of knowing what you want to know.
