I do not follow any guru, Hinduism is not my religion, but I was curious and got some books about them. As far as I could learn there are many phony gurus, but these usually do not get accepted by mainstream Hinduism. On the other hand the followers of true gurus experience elevation to other planes or dimensions, especially in the presence of the their guru (but this is not full enlightenment).
I suggest you read: a search in secret India, by T. Brunton. He was a journalist in the beginning of 1900 who went in India in search of a true guru.

I can't tell you about gurus I'm afraid. But I do think there is such a thing as enlightenment, at least in the Buddhist sense.

Of course, there's the additional problem of what you mean by 'enlightenment'. If we're talking about a flash of illumination that lifts you forever from the human realm, well, that I'm not too sure about.

But if you mean a state of mind that allows you to cope with the ups and downs of life then, yes, I think that's entirely possible.

So quite possibly some gurus can point you in the right direction, since I don't think enlightenment is a solely Buddhist preserve. And some may rip you off. That's life.

you can have small, temporary bursts of insight, i would think. but everlasting enlightenment? that would mean you'd never learn anything new.
