unfortuantely that depends on the guy. if he's shallow and more interested in his stature within his social circle then he may be embarrased by the attention and show you up as a loon to all his freinds just to try and build his own credability.
on the other hand lets say this if you called to tell him this and he's stayed on the phone for over an hour then he must have enjoyed the fact you called and also enjoyed talking to you, he may be releived you called and flattered that you like him.
Did you go way too far ... no if it feels right (and i hate to steal a line from NIKE but ) JUST DO IT!!
too many people in this world worry about how others perceive them, you are who you are be proud of it ... LOUD AND PROUD is what i teach my kids.
so my answer is thus ... if you wanted to call and got a response that lasted over an hour on the phone ... hell sounds to me like you did the right thing. go for it and good luck, i hope he doesnt turn out to be an idiot.

hi Kylie i congatulate you on having the courage to make the first move, why go thru life wondering what could have been? If it didn't work out on the phone he would have made some excuse to not talk for an hour, if you didn't call him , he may have been too shy to call you and you would never of had any contact once again congratulations on being brave enough to make the first move and i hope all goes well for you

I think that is a great thing! I just say keep making your feelings known and obvious (us men are simple creatures) and don't try to over analyze stuff too much.

That is a great sign. A bad sign would be he hangs up on you immediately after you tell him you like him, unless of course he is a nervous wreck.

if it's just one call then no no problem.... but if it is 10 calls in one night that gets on guys nerves very badly....
