I had a lively conversation today w/ a friend who is an Ismaeli Moslem. (Not sure of the spelling) He told me what he knew of the Sunni/Shia division(s) and what has been basically forming the different sects of Islam for the past 1000 years. It was a pretty long conversation, too. I realized just how much I don't know about Islam.
And I'm pretty well-read - I have read 'A History of God' and am halfway through 'The Battle For God' which were both written by Karen Armstrong. I thought, "Heck, if I know so little about Islam and I've actually read some about it, I wonder how many Americans know less than me. . ."

I just paged thru the link below that purports to be about Islam. I find it hilarious how so many Fundie Xtians point fingers at Islam and say: They want an Islamic world! And yet they don't see the tremendous irony in the fact that they (the xtian fundies) are hell-bent on a Christian world.

Irony is lost on the people who need it most...

I have a knowledge of Islam, I even took some university courses on Islam from an Arab christian professor who is one of the leading expert in Arab studies and culture. If you want to know more go and speak with Muslims, but do not forget the Christians who live in Muslim countries, sometimes in very difficult situations. Ask them as well to know how they get treated (a dose of reality).

I know that Muslims all over the world are murdering innocent people in cold blood and calling it their religious duty.

I also know that the world is learning to hate Islam as a cancer of mankind that must be removed.

I know that in the Middle East, the Koran is sold wrapped in plastic so that infidel hands don't touch it. Such is the religion and it's complete contempt for human life.

If you had any moral values at all, you wouldn't ever be a part of the religion and would be embarrassed to be associated with it.

I have found out a lot about Islam but am not impressed by its teachings.I am not convinced about the prophet-hood and the sincerity of Mohammed.To me he seems nothing more than a warlord.I do not intend to offend anybody.

The first thing that one should know and clearly understand about Islam is what the word Islam itself means. The religion of Islam is not named after a person, or a place, a tribe, a mountain or a river. Nor is the name just another –ism among the many that exist in the world today. The Arabic word Islam means the submission or surrender of one's will to the only true god worthy of worship, Allah (God in Arabic). A Muslim is the one who submits or surrenders his will to Allah. Hence, it was not a new religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Arabia in the seventh century, but only the true religion of God re-expressed in its final form.

I studied it for five years, reading two separate translations of the Qur'an from cover to cover, as well as numerous supporting materials, and attended novice classes as well. The Qur'an has errors, and Muhammad was a fraud.
