So glad you asked.

My girlfriend and I went to the island of Kauai for the last two years. So beautiful. We stayed at the Marriot Resort in Kalapaki Bay. Excellent place to stay.

The car thing is tough. The first time we went we did not rent a car, but we saw a great deal of the island through tours and guides. There are kayaking tours on Wailua River that are fantastic. And bus tours that can take you on the highway with no problem. If you get car-sick however...I would avoid the bus ride to Waimea Canyon.

On our second trip we did the car thing and it was excellent also. The car obviously allows you to have less of a schedule. The island is small and you don't really need a car. But, if you want to save a bit of time do it. If you decide not to do the car thing, I suggest booking your tours and such ahead of time.

The weather in October should be rather mild. It never really gets cold there, but it will be wet part of the time. In fact, they claim that the center of the island is the wettest location on the planet. However, I went in the winter months both times and the sun shined everyday. You will have to do week to week checking for the weather as you get closer to locking down your plans.

As a side note...

A friend of mine and his new wife went to Lanai for the honeymoon and did not think much of it. Some of the islands are more on the barren side than they are lush. Kauaii is the most lush of the islands, and is called the "Garden Isle."

Enjoy.
