Hi, need to know what you mean by working your way to Bangkok. What is your mode of travel?
I will assume that you are taking the local transport and the cheapest will be by the local provincial bus system.
For a start, from Phuket, you can try getting a bus to Suratthani and from there to the popular Koh Samui. Nice beaches and water around the island, so you can have a taste of its popularity.
From there, if you like, the next province of Chumphon has a few beach resorts too. Price is very low, in comparison to Phuket and Koh Samui. I believe you will not mind a stopover.
From there, head northward to Prachuab Khiri Khan. This will be sort of intermediate between Phuket and Bangkok. There are several stretches of great beaches along this eastern coastline. The more well-known will be Hua Hin, though you can get fine and lesser visited spots. After Phuket, I am sure you will appreciate this place. Popular beaches are found in city centre, Pranburi and Hua Hin.
Pick you r choice where you like to stay. There are many accommodations available. Fro low cost to very expensive like the Evason.
From there, the next province of Petchaburi boast some great beaches and resorts in Cha-am. Lying next to Hua Hin, it shares the same beauty that you find in Hua Hin itself.
And from here, it is a short trip to Bangkok. Guess this should be enough to work up your week stay.

sort of a broad question - as we do not know much abt what you are interested in, how old etc.. however, my guess is that you are looking for beaches and if you are working your way north from Phuket, if you like isolated beaches, there are lovely beaches just north of Baan Sapaan on the gulf coast.. you will not find many tourists there.. but if you like that sort of thing, there it is..

Check with your travel agent as well as at the airport desk providing tourist information on arrival in whichever city in Thailand you are flying into from wherever you are!
