A privatized company has taken over many installations, including army, air force, and navy called Government Military Housing (GMH). If you check the link, you will find more information. GMH manages post housing where I live, and they are ok. I will say that housing is adequate and clean. For married couples, there are 2 bedroom apartments, with carport and PLENTY of storage. Once you start having children, there are 3 and 4 BR townhomes for enlisted and duplexes and stand alone houses for officers. They have build brand new townhomes and renovated others. I live in a 4 BR duplex with an extra den, and a living room/dining combo. It is very spacious with lots of storage. Only downside is the DANG CHEAP LINOLEUM TILES!!! If they would replace them I would be great. Fenced in yard.
Check the link and you can see what GMH offers on several installations.

That's like asking what "apartments are like" in the United States.
Base housing varies widely depending on the type of housing (apartments or town houses), which is largely determined by availability and number of dependents. Some base housing is brand new while other base housing is older. Some bases have better housing than others.
If you put "Air Force base housing" into the Google image search, some of the newly built housing at a couple of bases comes up. Don't use this as the be-all, end-all guide to base housing, but it may give you an idea.

It pretty much looks like... ...a house.
There's a wide variation based on which base you're at and what's available at transfer. You can get anything from an apartment/condo/townhouse to a single house with yard.
However, you can be assured it will be clean and in good condition when you move in (it has to pass inspection when the previous tenant moves out).
At my last duty station, my wife and I got a brand new 2 bedroom duplex complete with fenced-in yard, garage, skylights, washer/dry/fridge, great room, walk-in closet, covered porch, and master bath. The development also had 3 bedroom units for families with kids... playground, basketball courts, walking distance to the gym, and, oh yeah... ...it was in Hawaii.
However, this situation was slightly above average. Expect a clean, functional unit wherever you go.

Housing varies greatly from AFB to AFB. It also depends on whether you are an officer or enlisted.
Officers housing is most often nicer than the homes for enlisted families.
At some bases, if you live in what is officially called "Inadaquate Housing", which means they plan to fix them up soon, but haven't yet.......you get to keep a portion of the housing allowance you get in your paycheck. They often try to move families out of that sort of housing into adaquate housing as soon as one is available, so its usually a temp residence for a year or less.
I wish you luck. Bases vary according to size. The larger the base, the more housing available and more facilities for families.

Take an average house of about 1000, to 1200 square feet, and that is about what you will have for family housing. It isn't luxurious, it might be a bit tight, but what you get is a 2 bedroom house that will do for what it needs to do. For pictures, I would ask the Civil Engineers at any active base, or the base housing office for information.
