Certainly. I use it to make cheese and ham toasties all the time, and the cleaning up is not difficult even though the edges are not sealed. Just a wipe down with kitchen paper does the trick. Better than a proper toastie maker. Don't forget to use the wee drip tray though.

Yes! That's what we use ours mostly for - the cheese oozes out though and it is a devil to clean so just don't fill the sandwiches too much. My favourite is smoked ham and cheddar cheese. Also either brush the grill with olive oil or slightly butter the outside of your sandwiches so it doesn't stick to the grill. I find the olive oil brushed on the grill makes the sandwiches taste better but it's up to you. Good luck with it.

I don't know what a toastie maker is, but you can use it to make grilled cheese sandwiches.

Yes, but my top tip would be to clean it when it is still hot. If any cheese or anything dries on it its a nightmare!
