How do I type in chinese on my Toshiba laptop?

My wife is Chinese and understands little about computers. She woudl like to send stuff to her friends in China. I have no clue as to how you make a keyboard change to other languages. What is an IME and how does it work. Is that what I am trying to start?

I dont think you can unless you got a program that changes it as you type...
I use toshiba and i never seen that option any ware
