seceral answers make sence:
1) they are brother and sister, and the mom made the breakfast. They do not go to school because their parents homeschool them.
2) The girl sleepwalks, and preapred breakfast that way
3) the boy sleepwalks, and prepared his own breakfast without knowing it
4) another person prepared the breakfast, one neither mentioned nor alluded to in the story.

The girl made the breakfast but went back to bed, she made it whilst he was still asleep, so he wouldnt of been able to know if she was asleep while he was or not!
