The word 'heet' if it stands for eat the answer is- it is mainly a belief in India , the cosmic rays during an eclipse can interfere with the process of digestion and absorption of food. Many of the facts found in ancient scriptures or passed down the generations
donot have scientific evidences. But we do not always question the authenticity of such notions. Certain facts are accepted as norms existing with in the major population. in the society.
At the same time young children, pregnant women and patients are exempted from such rules.
Even temples are closed during eclipses as pujas and offering of prasads are not conducted.
One more restriction is pregnant ladies are to be confined with in four walls without exposure during eclipses.
Probably the tradition or belief might have started to devote time in prayers, meditations etc.during the period of eclipses which require a minimum of 4-6 hours gap after a full meal.
Ultimately everything depends on what we believe in and the will to follow the same.
