Dude, look around and honestly you will be able to find a good reliable car for that price. I bought my 89' Accord for $1500, nice paint job (odd color though) good motor, never had any major work done to it. The only work that was done to it was the engine brackets that hold the engine in place. And i know this because it was my cousins car and i always helped him keep up the maintenance. Honestly if you look around and find an honest person that tells you they have been upkeeping with basic maintenance, then your good to go with anything 85'+ in the works of Honda and Toyota. Now if you want something that will allow you to do engine mods, then look for anything 90' and still with Honda and Toyota. If you do end up going American (god forbid) then your gonna spend a little more cause you dont wanna go with anything older than 5 years, cause it will be worthless to you after 5 years, with all the mechanical work your gonna put into an American car you can go buy yourself literally a brand new honda or toyota.
p.s, if you go Toyota or Honda. dont get a Honda Civic that is older than a 90' and dont get a corolla that is older than 92' cause they werent all that good at that point. Go with the sedans if you go that old. (Accords and Camrys)

Look for a older 90's model Honda. My friend bought a 92 Honda accord for $2000 4 years ago and the car still runs great! I have a 96 Honda Accord and it has 250,000 miles it still runs even though it needs some major work. I will always put my trust into a Honda!

I would get a Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera or a Buick Century (be sure to get the V6 models), those are indestructible cars and the repairs are a very few and far between, I would also recommend getting a Buick LeSabre or Oldsmobile 88, for them being such big cars they get very good gas mileage (20mpg city/upper 20s hwy).

$2500-$3000 almost can't buy you any car...
Even a Domestic cars would be like over 8yrs/80k miles... and thats about time it'll offer you trips to shops...
Toyota and Honda is very reliable... but within that price range, alone with their high resale value, it would be over 11 yrs old/120k miles on the odometer...
regardless of its brand, If you buy a car with that price range, expect to spend another $500 on the repair bill within half yr.
But the good this about Toyota is that, once the problem is fix, then its fixed, for cars like Ford or GM, they come back and haunt you...

For a truly informative decision I'd go to Edmunds.com. There you will find reviews by drivers and by the industry. We never buy a car without reviewing it on their site first.

try looking around retirement homes. seriously, you will likely find a older but low mileage car there with a for-sale sign in the window! Worked for my kid brother!
