My daughters are mechanics on the C130's and the KC 135. I think they have to go overseas (but not Iraq) at least once within four years. But with the war there are no guarantees if things get even worse.

Well, this one may offend some folks but I don't really care. As a former US Army Airborne Ranger assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division during Just Cause, and Desert Shield / esert Storm, I say this; Joining the Army, or any branch is a huge decision for any young man or woman to make. That life is not for everyone and no one can be thought less of simply for not electing to serve. However, if you want to enlist, goig to war is the strongest possibility for ANY soldier and one he or she must embrace as reality. If you are to scared to go to war and too much of a coward to defend our country, DO NOT disgrace my Army by looking for a clerk job simply so you can reap the same benefits I earned wihout living up to the same standards I had to.

There are many reasons people join the army, but one of them must always be a desire to serve one's country in whatever capacity is required. Being a soldier is dirty work. You probably don't need to hear this, but if your main concern is to avoid being sent to Iraq (or any other theater of war, for that matter) then the military is not for you.

No matter what job (MOS) you have in the Army you first go to basic training. They teach you how to kill and how to survive, but mostly how to kill. After you are trained to be a soldier you go to your AIT ('job' training). Your MOS/job is secondary to your job as a soldier, therefore, no matter what MOS you choose, you can still be sent to war. My sister is a dental assistant in the Army and she was sent to Iraq. I would suggest exploring non military options if you are concerned with being sent to Iraq or any other war zone. Good luck.

To be really safe try joining the Navy or Air Force instead. Whatever you do avoid the infantry.
