I want to know if there's any way to force the computer to hibernate/stand by after a specific amount of time, say 30 minutes. For example, I want to make my computer enter stand by mode after downloading stuff from iTunes, but don't want to have to do it myself (I mostly download stuff late at night). Oh, and, I want to avoid using the power options in the control panel. Somehow, I can never get it to work right.

Click start/run/and type in powercfg.cpl and pick a time for the HD to turn off, click hibernate and check the box to activate it.

For Windows XP

Go into your Control Panel by first clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on the Control Panel icon located in the right column of the Start Menu.

If your Start Menu is set to the Classic View, then begin by clicking on the Start Button.

Then click on Settings, then click on the Control Panel icon to open up the Control Panel.

Now, Double click on the Power Options icon to open the Power Options Properties Window.

Notebook computers have two adjustment settings entitled Plugged In and Running on Batteries.

Locate the Turn off monitor: selection in the center of the screen.

Then click on the menu arrow to choose a specific time to turn off your monitor.

When satisfied, click on the OK button to close the Power Options Properties window.

Then close the Control Panel to return to your windows session.

Windows will now turn off your monitor according to the time setting specified.
