Well, Portuguese is a Romance Language, which means it has its roots from Latin. All the Romance languages stemmed from Latin and that is why they are all similar. If you know any Spanish or French, some words may seem very similar, especially to Spanish.

Portuguese comes from the iberian brance of the romance languages. Romance languages are a branch of the indo-european languages. Portugese uses soft letters so that's why it sounds like russian.

From the Sueves - the tribe that settled in in Portugal and in Western Spain (still spoken there by many). Their language was just another of the many dialect vulgarizations of Latin, such as French, Catalan, Occitan, Provencal, Italian, Roumanian, Romanesh, etc.
