I like the Care Credit card.. It is only for vet care, and gives you up to 18 months to repay with no interest..
The problem with pet insurance, is that they require YOU to make the payment up front, and then reimburse your payment, minus a deductible...
With Care Credit, you have the credit you need for any emergent situation, so don't have to have cash on hand..
go to > http://carecredit.com/providerloc/
click on 'find a provider'..choose profession 'veterinary', and put in your zip code.

My dogs have better insurance then I do :)

I started with VPI - I liked the fact they covered routine and preventative care. But was very frustrated when I realized that they work on a payment schedule - so they decide how much each service is worth. So it doesn't matter what you paid for it.

When I got my dogs spayed and neutered the vet charged me over $700 for the two (crazy, I know). I went through the claims process and about 2 months later I got a check for $75 for the spay and $70 for the neuter. The rabies vaccine reimbursement was only $5, you can't find a rabies vac for $5 in Southern California.

So after that I went looking for a better solution. My mom recommended Banfield Pet Hospital, they are inside most PetsMarts. You can get a Wellness Plan that covers all vaccines and "well dog" stuff (including fixing if you need it) and you pay a low monthly fee.

Then for "disaster" insurance I went with Petcare - you can choose your coverage level. I went with them because they payback a percentage of what the vet bill is, whatever that cost may be. I have 70% coverage on my two. Their customer service is pretty good and they have always been very helpful.

I hope this helps!

I say skip the insurance and put the money you'd spend on monthy premiums to insurance into a savings account for your dog. Most pet insurance companies require you to pay up front for treatment anyway.

With a savings account, you'll gain interest on your money. And maybe you'll be lucky never to need to an expensive operation, which is why alot of owners want insurance. You'll still have money put away in case, but you won't be paying for something you may never use.

Lots of people I know use the VPI pet insurance, but I personally have never tried it. I would just look around to see which is the most affordable and most appealing to your needs.

is your dog very sickly??? if not,,, insurance is a big rip off...... most vets have annual low cost rabie clinics ( you can go get your dogs shots- all of them for about 10$ a shot) you do not need an annual checkup if your dog is healthy....... just regularly scheduled shots,,, and insurance won't pay for flea prevention etc.
