A friend of mine was recently attacked by a German Shepard dog during the course of his employment inside a business, and had the attacked caught on camera. The dog was not hurt, stung a little momentarily from a shovel used a defense against the dog. The woman is pressing charges. Is this considered animal cruelty? My friend was jailed and charged with it. Any legal people out there with an opinion?

It wasn't animal cruelty. That would be hurting or harming an animal in a way that is not deserved or in your own personal defense. However, if they were already jailed, there is little they can do about it but have it stricken from their record. Make an appeal and if that fails, take her to court for damages to their name and for their medical bill. If they had the right lawyer, they could easily sue for damages to their career/slander and win. The best thing to do would be to find a big-wig and pay up because if she charged them and they've already received jail time, a new/unheardof attorney wouldn't be as much of a threat.

Oh my, I am so glad yourfriend is okay. I am a huge animal lover and would never dream of hurting an animal for any reason. Even if I was attacked. I am not a lawyer and truly don't know the legalities. But I feel your friendwas scared being attacked and defended herself how she/he saw fit... Even though I could not hit an animal wether I am attacked or not. I don't think anyoneshould stand there and let themselves be attacked and not defend themselves against the animal. I am appauled that your friend was arrested for defending themselves. What the hell does the judicial system think your friend should have done?stand there and say ohhhh goood dog keep attacking and hurting me??? I so hope your friend gets off

that's animal cruelty. My stupid roommate's dog attacked my dog - the dogs wanted to fight to the death. I awoke to the sounds of the fight and looked outside. My (EX) roommate was beating my dog in the head with a shovel to attempt to get the 2 dogs to stop fighting.
After the fact, the roommate was upset and kept telling the story as if she were hitting both dogs with the shovel - no way in hell she actually hit her dog. Give me a ******** break - animal lovers could not do that. <>>. For the next 2 weeks, my dog lay there, barely moving most the time - she's an old dog - her eyes were bloodshot and she looked hurt. The other dog was up running around within hours of the attack.
Anyway, it's animal cruelty.

Self defense, and had your friend been seriously hurt he'd be in a position to sue the lady for not controlling her animal. Take the camera footage to court.

I would have killed the phucking thing because once a biter always a biter...your friend should charge the owner of the dog for and undue mental and physical damages something like that anyway...

Yes and no.....having been bitten by dogs before.....good for your friend defending himself. As a GSD owner....hit my dog and die! I feel for both sides here. As far as cruelty to animals goes....I've kicked my GSD in the head before and not even phased her a bit. As long as your friend wasn't aiming to kill the dog should be alright.

I would say no, especially if there were no permanent injury. Sounds like a clear case of self defense.
