What makes them function? How are they powered? BB guns are powered by either gas or a battery. Is it the same with the real thing?

Sort of. "Real" guns propel their projectiles via an explosion of gunpowder. The expanding gas exerts pressure on the back of the projectile, pushing faster and faster out the barrel:

In a gun where the bullet has gunpowder in it, the bullet is struck in such a way as to ignite the gunpowder, which rapidly releases a lot of gas, propelling the remains of the bullet away from the hot compressed gas behind it and out the main opening presented to it--through the barrel of the gun. So yes, same basic concept; no, not the same method.

When the hammer strikes the back of the bullet, it ignites the packed powder in the casing. The compression of the exploding gases expels the bullets. In guns that have rifled barrels, the rifling of the barrel causes the bullet to spin as it moves down the barrel, increasing the bullets accuracy and distance.
