I found myself wondering about the same thing not too long ago and do you know what I decided? That yes, ketsup is good on fries, not mash potatos and french dressing is red like ketsup (and it's tangy) so why not have french dressing on my mashed potatos? And then guess what? I did and I found that it was good!
Mmmm! Try it some time and you too may find that it is good.

you'd think ketchup would be good on anything. It's probably got a lot to do with the dynamic and chemical make-up of the actual french fry. It has more of a solid build, so the ketchup does not run through it like mashed potatoes. also, the deep fryer adds a tasty crunchy texture, that, for some reason, tastes better with ketchup. Besides, who would want to put something soggy on something already soggy? It's like putting water in Pepsi. (ew). I don't know. I have so many theories...

It's preference and a person's perception of texture. Also, there are different flavours included in the two. French fries have the oil from being deep fried. Mashed potatoes could include chives, etc... and give a different taste.

Well, it all depends on your personal preferances. I don't think i've ever tried ketchup on mashed potatoes. Perhaps it's becaused they're boiled for a long period of time and then mashed up. Textures and sight have a lot to do with your eating experiances. If something looks gross to you, chances are that your mind will tell you that it looks/tastes and IS gross.

My initial answer is that french fries are rigid and crispy, but that does not account for the people who like ketchup on their scrambled eggs (which are neither rigid or crispy...if done properly). It could have something to do with the ingredients of mashed potatoes. I personally make mine with sour cream and butter. I've never mixed sour cream, butter, and ketchup in any other food, so it's no surprise (to me at least) that I don't consider mixing them here.

I actually like ketchup with my mashed potatoes.
But for those who don't, I'm guessing the reason behind it is the oil in fries. I think anything (or almost anything) deepfried is good with ketchup.
Mashed potatoes's texture and taste (since it's mixed with cream/milk, etc) doesn't suit the tangy taste of ketchup.

I went to an Irish-themed restaurant- if that's what I want to call it- that served baked potatoes with sour cream and salsa. Try it sometime.Personally I can't eat tater tots without mashing them up in the bowl and adding just the right amount of ketchup and pepper.

This is a good question. First, think about what foods( texture) usually go good with ketchup. Second, think of the texture of mashed potato and see if you could apply that texture into any foods and still taste good.

it's not bad on mashed potatoes, but the ketchup needs to be warm if you eat it with them (i like it cold on fries).

also, if you just mix a little ketchup into mashed potatoes and eat it with some type of breaded, fried chicken (tenders, nuggest, etc.) and dip the chicken in it....it's actually REALLY good.

don't put gravy with it though, nor too much butter! that makes it nasty mixed with ketchup.

I Think Its Cause The Fries Are Boiled In Oil( I think ) And The mashed potatoes are instant or traditionally made without being boiled ( I think --again )
