I can't say it better than
"If you look Hispanic, people who speak Spanish to you are most likely trying to be extra-friendly to you, because most Hispanics bond with that language. She was being nice and you were a b**** about it. Next time just smile and respond in English, they'll get the hint that way. No need to be rude."
As posted above.
Christ, you Americans are weird. Can't your country grow up a bit over the race thing?
She was clearly being friendly.

If you were that short with her I think it was a bit rude, however the request itself was not. She was possibly trying to be nice, so simply 'talk in English!' is a bit harsh, but if you don't appreciate the gesture by all means say so... just try putting it a bit more politely next time, like 'Sorry, I may look hispanic but I prefer English' or something.

Yes, it was rude. Too many people today think that it's OK to speak whatever comes to mind whenever it pops into their head! Whatever happened to tact and civility? I am a Latino American (4th generation) who doesn't speak a lick of Spanish. All my life I have had other Latinos assume that I do and try to speak to me in Spanish. Do I get huffy and snappy and tell the to "talk" in English? No- I simply smile, politely answer them in English, and they always get the hint.

To me, this is not a big deal, and there's no need to dwell on it. Maybe you should think why you don't like the fact that you DO look Hispanic, and this MIGHT be the issue. I don't mean to be rude, I was just offering you my opinion. I've been spoken to in Korean a few times when Koreans thought I WAS one of them. I simply told them I'm NOT Korean.

it depends wether u said it in a soft tone or harsh tone.
basically u have to respect and tolerate the diference in human background, races and other things.
if u do look like a Hispanic (but actually u dont), how on earth would she knows what origin u are from?? i think she's just trying to make herself feel at home (if she thought u as Hispanic) and be nice to u.

Yes it does sound kind of rude, but I totally understand your point. If people are working here in America, and they are dealing with the public, I think they should definately be fluent in English and use it as well.

If someone from another country comes to live in this country they should by all means learn the language. For their benefit as well as people who interact with them.
But...
What you did was rude. This is a free country and we have freedom of speech. I agree with your feelings about it. Sometimes you should not say what you think no matter how right you may be.

Yes it was rude. All you had to do was answer her in english--it's not that big of a deal. It seems there are more underlying problems here--your prejudice. She's working and making a living. Now days you're lucky to get a "hi" and "thank you" from anyone handing out food--be lucky that you get one at all. Politeness is universal. If you went to France and got food, would you be expected to speak French?
PS...I'd never piss off anyone that handles my food. *spit spit*

So she said 'hola' and 'adios'... big deal! You obviously knew what it meant! I'm Canadian and just got back from a trip to Mexico... I was saying 'gracias' for days afterwards!
Customer service workers get enough grief from the public without getting berated for foolish reasons. If she gave you the right food, she did her job.. so yes you were rude. I'd hate to see what you'd do with a deaf person who signed to you!
