Until they are old enought to try and climb out. This could make a nasty fall. There are plenty of beds that re designed for toddlers over one. They are small and don't take up much room and are low to the ground so they don't get hurt if they fall out. And if they need you for any reason they can get out of bed and get your attention. Don't leave a toddler in a crim because you need to feel that as long has he is on there he will be safe. It is no longer safe if he discovers that he can escape without your knowledge.

All children are different, so age should not be a basis for this decision. When a child starts trying to climb out of the crib or is tall enough that they can fall over the top rail, it's time to consider a bed. We were blessed that our child never attempted to crawl out of the crib, but when his height became a concern, we spent several weeks talking about a "big bed" and bought a few books (one was Elmo) about moving to a big bed. The transition was smooth and he was excited about getting a bed. Good luck to you!

well if you have two children you should of known how old the first one got out of the crib well personaly they get out of the crib at age 1-2 years of age then you should get a small toddler bed with little railling on the sides. then when they get older 3-6 a twin bed. Good luck

I waited until I saw him trying to hike over the side of the crib. Keep them in there for as long as they will stay. My son started sleeping in his toddler bed at 28 months. It's a totally individual thing. Do it when you child seems ready.

That is a matter of preference. Best to keep a baby there to keep them safe. No need to ruch growing up.
I was in a rush to get my oldest out of the crib thinking he had to at age 2 to grow up. All it did was give him freedom to climb out of bed and fall out of bed. I had to buy a bed guard so he woudln't fall out. My middle child stayed in the crib until her head reached the top and her feet met the bottom of the crib. She was over three years old. My youngest......I don't even remember, after three kids it is just a blurr. All I know is that there is no hurry to get them out of the crib.

i think two is the ideal age. they understand the concept of a "big boy/girl bed" and they are getting too big for the crib anyway.

as always, have a rail or something on the side of the new bed that keeps them from falling out!

My daughter took herself out. She was about 10 months, tried to climb out after I had lowered the mattress and had the rail up. Scared her so bad she wouldn't sleep in the crib any longer. So I put a twin mattress on the floor and she started sleeping in it. She later "graduated" to having the bed put on a frame and I got a rail from Toys R US so she wouldn't fall out and put the bed against the wall on the other side.

I waited until my son was 3. He was climbing in and out and could understand by then that making the move to a big boy bed was a fun and exciting thing. He also understood to STAY in bed so we never had to deal with the waking up and coming back out throughout the night.

Between 2 and 3. I would do it earlier if s/he can climb out to avoid an injury. I kept my son in as long as I could but I ultimately switched to a bed before 3 because I wanted to encourage him to stay dry during the night and I couldn't do that if he wasn't able to get out of bed to use the potty.

As soon as they're starting to try to climb out of it, or tall enough to. It'll make one nasty fall. I took both of my kids out a little after they turned one (i think on average its at 18 months). I put them in toddler beds, they fell out the first few nights getting used to no bars, but they found it fun to be able to climb in and out like a big kid.
