My best-friend's dog is a 1 year old female beagle and is in heat, they found out she was in heat tuesday Feb. 27 and she says her parents let her out with a male dog. 1 short haired Chesapeake golden bay retriever. But i think they did that without knowing she was starting her heat. My friend says she noticed her being swollen today March 2. and she also says she thinks shes sore because her dog keeps licking herself. I will keep everyone updated if she sees more signs or somthing. Shes only 1 so she is pretty small and she is worried that if she gets pregnant the puppies will be to big and her puppy will die. shes my best-friend and i dont want to see her even more sad.. please help??

Well, first things first. A heat cycle lasts basically, 21 days. There is a weeks time that the dog may be bred in the cycle. The question then becomes - did you notice right off that the dog was in heat at the very beginning of the cycle - or did you notice a week into the cycle?

What color is her discharge, clear? clear but blood tinged? A heat cycle has three stages - the 1st 7-10 days, they tend to bleed heavier and will not accept a male, the 2nd 7-10 day segment their vulva will swell and they will be willing to accept a male. This is when they can get pregnant. The last segment also will last approx. 7-10 days and they will be going out of heat and not accept a male.

It sounds like she is in the fertile part of her heat cycle right now - but of course I'm not there and can't see her and we don't know for sure - but you do mention swelling now.

Some tips after she goes out of heat to see if she is bred. If you feel, her vulva, and it is mushy like when you pooch your lips out and squeeze she probably got bred, if it is firm like your nose, there is a good possibility she's not ready and she didn't get bred,

Of course, you will be able to tell for sure in 4 weeks. If she looks pregnant - I don't mean period bloat - but pregnant - and you need to watch her close -Take Her To The Vet ..if...she is pregnant and do it at 4 weeks pregnant. The dog you mention is entirely too big for her. If she is pregnant she will need medical intervention.

For now, keep her in the house. She'll want to go out and be bred if she is ready and will willingly stand for a male - so be careful.

Good Luck! I wish you the best and hope your dog is not pregnant to the retriever!

Dogs are in season 21 days.. If she started her season on the 27th then she would have been standing on the 2nd but she would have time to take her to get a shot to end the pregnancy. But it will extend the cycle for another 21 days and you have to make sure she does not bred again!!! Then get her S P A Y E D. unless she is an exclent specimen of the breed and hunter she should not be have puppies anyway so have her spayed. The large dog she is bred to now she will have to have a C section to have the puppies or die having them. They will be too huge.

I have heard of a mini foxy breeding with a kelpie, Im pretty sure that her dog will be fine. Dogs in the wild go on heat at usually six months so I dont think that the dog being only one will kill it giving birth if it is pregnant. Beware some dogs (like mine) have phantom pregnancys its kinda funny they think they are having babies and they get big and some even get false labor pains (we have not seen our dog ever do that but she does produce milk and for a while she carries around a favorite toy like a teddy thinking it is a puppy, she has never even been with a male dog while she is on heat and she is seven) Dogs lick themselves alot when they are on heat, I think its just to keep themselves clean down there.

don't go crazy just yet. yes in a perfect doggie world the daddy should be smaller than mommy in hope that the mommy will be able to carry the puppies safely for her. real world, not always the case. before you jump to terminate the pregnancy, you can have your vet do an ultra scan and make an informed decision based on the size of the puppies. yes i strongly believe in fixing your pets before these things happen. but the deed is done and this is now your decision. finding the puppies great homes, signing contracts that the puppies be fixed, fixing mommy after the birth, all great. but for now make informed decisions. if the vet Say's it's o.k. you can all have a positive experience and some very happy puppies. please let us know how everything turns. by the way mark 63 days on your calender. good luck to all of you.

when a dog is in heat she will automatically lick herself. thats nothing to worry about, she just wants to be clean. She will have swelling but that isnatural too, it happens everytime. If you dont want puppies keep her away from male dogs. If you don't want her to have any more seasons then take her to the vets and they will operate on her so she wont be able to have pups. This will also ensure that there will be no more of her coming into heat.

Your friend should have her dog fix ASAP if she is not planning to breed her. It does not matter if her dog is in heat, dog can still get pregnant just as easy. The different is, when dog is in heat, they are more likely to find a mate or more aggressive sometimes. If her dog is pregnant, she cant really do much with her dog unless she took the dog to the vet and request for surgery, which will cost a lot and dangerous to the dog itself.

on occasional cases like these where the pups turn out to be like, twice as large as the mother when it's in the womb, then there will be a great chance the mom might not survive without a surgical decision done by the vets. but it might not turn out like that, because remember the pups carry both the mom AND the dad's genes, so the pups might be small like the mom and have dad's personalities. keep us updated and we'll see what happens.

and the way it's licking and is sore is just because it's natural and she possibly knows that she's pregnant and being 1 years old, have no experience what-so-ever so is just like 'wtf'

You and your friend sound quite young. I would think her parents would know what they are doing. The dog would not have any signs of pregnancy this soon.

I would hope her parents get the dog spayed as soon as possible.

If your friend really cares about her pet, she'll have her spayed. The licking and swelling is normal, but tell her to keep her dog inside/under supervision AT ALL TIMES and as soon as her heat is over, she needs to have her spayed.
