It's just inter-service rivalry. That's been going on in every armed force, in every country in existance. Don't take it personal.
When the "gravel agitators" ( infantry ) get into trouble on the ground, the first folks they call for is the Air Force. And anyone who has ever witnessed a B-52 strike will tell you how awesome a spectacle that is. Nothing in the area survives.
Most Air Force personnel are not combat trained, neither do they go through a real rigorous Basic Training, and the other services do. ( The Navy being an exception, but they catch flak too! ) So that gives the other branches something to tease the Air Force about.
But if it comes down to it, the Air Force and the Navy have the ultimate weapons of destruction. Thermonuclear weapons. No other branch in the service harnesses the power the Air Force has. Also, B-52, B-1, B-2, F-117, F-15E, and now the F-22, have awesome strike capabilities. They can destroy infantry and armor with the greatest of ease. What would take intense fighting on the ground for the other services takes only seconds with an airstrike.
Oh, and Air Force personnel need an education to run high tech equipment. The other branches ( Navy excluded ) could hire a trained chimp to hump gear into a combat zone! ( Kidding! )
So be proud, Flyboy.......( or girl ) You've nothing to be ashamed of.

I don't know why people think that the Air Force is not as good as the Army, Navy or the Marines. A lot of people just judge them because they don't have to be as physical tough for their job. But the reality is they have many more hours in training then most people. I mean look how long pilots have to train before they can have combat missions. Also people who say all they do is paper work they obviously don't know that ALL branches do that, just because the Army and Marines get more publicity doesn't mean that the Air Force is less important. Someone who knows about military and tactics knows that the air support can be the most important thing in a battle. But people who are not in the military or have never served shouldn't be complaining because everyday people in ALL of the military forces are potently putting there lives at risk and we should appreciate that service no matter what branch they are in.
Also no one can compare 2 branches of service to one another. What is easy to someone is maybe hard to someone else. People who say oh the requirements are so much easier than the others that is in the opinion. I mean I could met any of the branches requirements when I was 14. What does that mean, are the requirements to low? Of course not. I hope that we all can just get along because after all we are all on the same side right?
I hope this helps. I get some of the same things when I say that I am in the Navy ROTC. It seems that they think that I am only travel on a ship, but in fact I am going to BUD’s after I graduate. Anyone who doesn't know what BUD's should look it up. I also hope you didn't reply here.
One more thing, it is possible to be shot down with a gun but not probable. Have you ever heard of the “Red Barren”?

We absolutely should have respect for every branch of the military; they all have the same goal in mind. I think it is just how people are. Some see the Airforce as being light duty, but they don't know what they're talking about. I am a Marine and I respect the Airforce.

I grew up with stories of the foundation of the 5th Airforce when they were still part of the Army. More specifically the 345th Bombardment Group during WWII. There is only one book I can find about this group. It is called Warpath Across the Skies.
Listening to what dad described and reading this book tells me there is no reason for a lack of respect. These men were not cowards. Certainly not diving a B-25 Mitchell directly into the gun sights of enemy positions or shipping. Or flying 50 to 100 feet off the deck while running bombing runs on enemy airfields. No these guys were also innovators. Like adding small parachutes to frag bombs that kept the bombs from blowing their own tails off.

Well, I can say that my brother joined the Air Force and completed probably a few weeks of boot camp before his medical discharge. I'll admit, he was going to be picked on no matter what since he is a bit of an odd fit (he walked in with a Calvin Klein bag) but the stories he told were horrendous and I was outraged. He ended up losing 60 some pounds and had a stroke. He was fit and muscular when he went in, he came out malnourished and in the psych ward. So as far as it being soft, I don't agree. There was MUCH more than teasing and training going on. I sincerely hope it was an isolated incident.

While there is a lot of competitiveness among all the branches, it does seem as though the Air Force gets picked on the most. I think it might have to do with history. The Air Force has only been around since 1947, that's 60 years. It hasn't been around long enough to have a lot of the traditions and history the other branches have. The Navy, Army and Marines have all been around since the late 1700's, so therefore they have more history, more bragging rights, and more clout.

Because as far as we can see, the Airforce is full of paper-pushers. They aren't held to the same physical standards as the other branches, are rarely put into combat or dangerous situations, and spend the majority of their career in the continental U.S. They are generally referred to as "The Chairforce." With that said, I think every member of the armed forces respects the other branches (except the marines, they don't like anyone), it's just a brother type love-hate relationship.

They don't get shot at by guys with guns unless they crash, and aren't famous for ground fighting if and when that happens.
Yeah they may get shot at in their multi-million dollar jet, but rifle bullets don't bring down jets. The drop their munitions and fly home somewhere safe, where they have a few drinks and go to bed. In a real bed.
In places like Iraq and Afghanistan, who have no air forces whatsoever, they are at very low risk of becoming casualties.
That, princibly, is the reason that Army and Marine soldiers think of the fly-boy's as a bunch of spoiled elitists sometimes.
But that doesn't mean they don't have the Respect of the guys on the ground. Air Force means Air Support, vital to any ground-based op's. That jet rushing in over their heads is comming to help, Maybe even save their ***. They love 'em. They just think they have it too easy!

1. It's the youngest branch, birthed of the Army Air Corps.
2. It's somewhere in their regulations that they cannot be correctively trained in a physical manner (push-ups).
3. It has the shortest, easiest, and least comprehensive basic training.
4. In the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps, the NCOs run alongside the junior men. In the Air Force, the NCOs follow the juniors in a golf cart (at least in training. wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen it with my own two eyes.)

It is not that there is no respect it is because of World War I, People from all the branches "respect them" they just give them crap.
Troops were in the mud, with the rats and the disease, while the pilots went back to base, slept on beds, had coffee and food, and got clean clothes, yeah the life span was shorter, and yes they had to deal with German pilots trying to shoot them out of the air, but to the ground pounders it was the food, and the warmth that was eluding them.
World War II, pretty much the same thing happened, They got more of the girls because they were the "aces" and got better leave schedules so they could go out to town at night and have fun while the ground pounders where in the dirt eating dirt.
Now: The Air Force has shorter deployments, they are not strongly present in this war, Their bases are much nicer both in Iraq and outside of Iraq, they have Golf Courses on their bases.
