I would like to contradict the answer before me. Lions and tigers are not actually the same species. However, the reason they can interbreed successfully is because they have the same number of chromosomes, and the chromosomes code for the same genetic trait. However, this cannot happen with cats and dogs because they do not have the same number of chromosomes, nor do the chromosomes code for the same traits.

Nah, of course not! Its because the chromosomes don't match, they're genetically too different for that. It would be like breeding a bear and a moose, nothing happens. Interestingly enough, you should also note that if your poodle bred with fox it wouldn't have any puppies either, because a fox has more chromosomes then a dog. Genetically, it just doesn't work.
Additionally, the person above me is wrong, lions and tigers are a separate species...that would be like saying a donkey and a horse are the same species, they're not, obviously, but they are both in the same family, they're both equids, just like lions and tigers are both felids.

your answer to this question is no. Cats and dogs are serperate species and therefore cannot create babies. Unlike lions and tiger who can because they are the same species.
