Don't they think that if a being has been alone for all that time, he'd have gone totally insane by now?

It is out the realm of our conceptual ability as living beings. I think physical life is just the Disney World for spirits to break up the monotony of eternity. That is why there are so many planets out there.

Eternity is a subjective term concerning time defined by the user. Time is measured in both the earths rotation around the sun (orbit) and the earths rotation (spin) in space.

Most people can only expect to live to be 87 years old and that's an average not a guarantee. You could argue that most people view eternity as any length of time over 87 years. That is any amount of time longer than you are alive. Again it's subjective to the terms user.

As far as the god question - I studied a number of mythologies in High school and college (ancient Greek, Norse, black foot, Christianity, Buddhism, etc). Most are created as a form of control and teaching. These were the learned people in the past (some even scientists - Think about it Darwin was a monk).

It floored me one day when I had what seemed like a hard core bible thumping Christian remind me that the bible was written by man. The stories passed down from generation to generation of course changing as it went (you all played the telephone game where you start with one saying and at the other end of the room it doesn't even resemble the original saying). Something most people (I was guilty of this myself) don't even realize is what version of the bible they read. The most popular is the King James version. It's called the King James edition, because King James changed the bible to suit his needs. The most interesting thing this person told me was that religion is faith. You have knowledge that you're willing to change your mind about, but faith is forever. He told me that when his mother died he prayed like no other she'd live even though he knew it wouldn't do any good. Faith is like a reflex it's such a part of you that you aren't capable of changing your mind about it.

If God condemns someone for eternity, and God knows everything, then that would make him a sadist. It's funny, to imagine eternity, I think of the last 24 hours, then the last day, then the last etc... When you meditate on times past, then you really see how fast yet slow it is. Amazing really. Now if I were to relive all that time in isolation, then there would really be some serious introspection!

The closest I got is that I could tell you how long the Clash documentary "From Here To Eternity" is. But yeah I don't much believe that stuff either.

Why "he"? Why not "she"? Why staying alone? Who said that?
Aaa..., I got it: you're talking about God. Well, for Him, time is different and He doesn't know any other time than the eternity itself. Or: God is not a "he" or a "she", it is a "it": the pure energy that flows in the Universe and turns dumb piles of matter into intelligent beings. I spoke.

What being could be alone for eternity ..?.. except, perhaps, for a false idea of a being.

POST SCRIPT: It appears that mrquestio... has the upper hand when it comes to knowing about God and time... He seems quite certain that he alone understands the true nature of god and how time for a deity isn't quite like time for mere mortals - interesting, isn't it, that he should have such a privileged knowledge over the rest of us.

People dont realize how long eternity is, eternity can be calculated like this though

E=T(L+W)U
E=Eternity
T=time
L=length
W=width
U=Universal Longetivity
This should give you eternity if you know the numbers

Time is a man made device to mark one event to the next.

In heaven there is no "Time" as we know it.

So perhaps Eternity is just a state of blissful existance best described by the word Eternity.

People cannot totally realize how long eternity is because it has no end. People know how much a million is, but how much is infinite? Its conceptually mind boggling.
