How early before the graduation date? I'm graduating from college on May 14th. Our school has already had commencement fairs with advertisements about ordering graduation announcements to send to family and friends.

You should always send invitations to large events at least a month in advance, so that people have time to reserve the date, and time for their replies to reach you through standard mail.

30-45 days is a good guideline, so you should be mailing announcements no later than April 14th.

Announcements are different from invitations. Announcements are sent AFTER the event. Invitations sent not more than a month before in most cases.

They need to be in the mail 4 weeks in advance for out-of-state people and 2 weeks in advance for in-state people. Don't underestimate the amount of time it takes to order them, address them all (many have 2 envelopes each!) and actually get to the post office.

One month to six weeks is a good rule of thumb.
