I have adopted five dogs from the local shelter. I recently adopted a female aussie mix who I was told had been spayed by the shelter. This is a really small hillbilly shelter with a high kill rate and horrible conditions. I took her to the vet the day after I adopted her for a health checkup, shots, etc and much surprise! he says she is pregnant, due in about three weeks. I called the shelter right away to find out if they would help me find homes for the pups, even with something as small as a courtesy posting on petfinder, and to let them know that I didn't appreciate them lying about her being spayed. Their responce was that they were going to take her away from me since I allowed her to mate, and she would have to be euthanized because they didn't have room for her or pups. I have already talked with my vet and the police. Since I have proof that I adopted her and then found out she was so far along I am protected. Any ideas on where to get help with placing the pups?

Sadly there are alot of "shelters" out there that are doing more harm than good in my opinion. The same thing has happened at the county shelter where I live a few times that I know of. They also have no policy on spay/neuter after adoption. If the shelter you are working with is anything like this one, I hate to say it, but you are on your own with the placement. Work with your vet and he will most likely be able to find aid to help with vaccinations, worming, etc. That will take some of the cost off your shoulders. Place ads in your local paper and online. Many papers will work with you and offer free or discounted ads if you let them know that this is a shelter animal who had puppies. Try craigslist.com also. Make sure you ask for an adoption fee when you are placing them. Make up a contract requiring spay/neuter after adoption and follow up on it. Just do your best to find good, loving homes for the pups. If you are unable to find homes try talking to a shelter out of your area. They should at least be able to give you a courtesy posting at least. Good luck with it all! I have been through similar things with the local shelter here, and I know how frustrating it can get. If you need any further help, just email me.

Unfortunately, there is a doctrine of law called, "Caveat Emptor" or "Let the Buyer Beware." What this means is that it is up to the buyer to ensure that the product is what the seller claims it is and the buyer is buying the product from the seller as is. Once sold, the seller has no obligation to the buyer. The only exception would be if you could prove the shelter knew the dog was pregnant. They will clearly claim they didn't know and you wouldn't be able to prove otherwise. It's sad, especially where animals are concerned, but I doubt you would have any success at trying to fight this and would only spend a lot of time and money on a fruitless effort, for which the time and money could both better be spent trying to take care of finding the puppies good homes. Thank you for choosing a pet from a shelter, a bad one at that and taking the time to be responsible. If more people were like you, we wouldn't have those shelters. Thank you and sorry for your dilemma.

Contact your local no-kill shelter and ask for a spay or neuter certificate. You can use the certificate at a local vets office which they will usually tell you which ones will do it. You by the certificate and it pays for your dog to be spayed or neutered. That what I did with my dogs. And see if they can help you by taking the pups and adopting them out for you. Pups normally dont last long in these shelters as they are generally adopted out quickly. You can find no-kill shelters in your area by looking on the net for no-kill shelters and where you live.

Put the pups in the local paper in the classifieds. Tell the paper your story and see if they will advertise for free - its worth asking all they can say is NO. They maybe even interested in running a story casue how many other people have been caught out by this local shelter?!?!?!
Ask your local radio station to do a broadcast.

place ads in the paper and place them online.... puppies will go fast Good luck!

I think it's a bunch of BS about the shelter. I really hope they dont take her away from you, you didnt do anything wrong. You did something right about adopting her.

you might also try craigslist, where you can list everything for free. just be careful who you give the puppies to; it's not the same world it used to be... and who knows what might be done to a "free" puppy. i suggest selling them, even if it is for 25 dollars, it will deter the wrong people from taking them.
